Welcome to my corner on the Internet!

I created this personal homepage to let the world know who I am. Here you can find some personal information about me, my favourite bookmarks, my weblog, and some other fancy stuff like the shoutbox and surveys. Although my native language is Dutch, I decided to create an English homepage since the most of my visitors speak English. It is possible, however, that you'll find some non-English content, since visitors are able to drop their comments and shouts. Enjoy your stay!

My Weblog:
I started this weblog because I wanted to share anything usefull, funny, interesting or whatever, I come across while surfing the World Wide Web. You may also find some real-life related news items here from time-to-time, in case I have something worthy to share with the world.

30/03/2004 20:48 - New follow-up from Elena - Vincent van Scherpenseel - 7 comments
Today I received a reply from Elena, the Kid of Speed. A quote from the message: "The reason I asked not to give away e-mail is because I am not able to access my mailbox very often and if I had e-mail address on this site, I'd be overloaded with e-mails which I wouldn't be able to read.".
I received a lot of e-mail lately from people asking me if I could forward their messages to Elena, since the (new) e-mail address in the WHOIS information doesn't exist. I asked Elena what I should do with all these e-mail, wether she wants me to forward them or not. Please don't take it personal if Elena doesn't want me to forward her e-mail, she's thankfull for all the visitors and all the attention she gets, but imagine receiving thousands of e-mails and having to reply them...
I also received e-mail from several press journalists (from Belgium, Ireland, Australia, Germany and Italy) asking me if I could get them in touch with Elena. To all press: I asked Elena if she wants me to forward the press e-mail to her. I'm awaiting a new follow-up about this, so please be patient, as soon as I have new information I'll post it here in my weblog.

29/03/2004 23:40 - E-mail from Elena, the Kid of Speed - Vincent van Scherpenseel - 0 comments
I received a reply from Elena, the Kid of Speed! She thanked me for mirroring her Chernobyl site, and said she was confused by all the attention she suddenly gets. She doesn't consider herself a heroin, but a lot of people (me included) do think she is.
Unfortunately, she doesn't want me to share her e-mail address with the community due to the fact that she's got very bad Internet access (she's only online a once and a while), so I promised not to give it out. I was surprised to see she changed the WHOIS information of her domainname (kidofspeed.com) to a non-existing e-mail address.
Now we're at it: she said she isn't going to use her domainname, she only got it when she registered at Angelfire. I told here it would be wise to have her domainname point at her Angelfire website.
In the same e-mail she asked me to remove a couple of pictures from my mirror, but unfortunately, she wasn't very clear at that point. However, when I replied to her my e-mail bounced with a "503 Administrative prohibition -- access from this ip address is blocked." message. After sending my e-mail from different e-mail address I'm still waiting for her follow-up.
I also asked her if she would like to do an interview with the visitors of my website, but she's not sure about that yet. So, probably more about this later.
I received a lot of e-mail about Elena over the last couple of days, with a lot of people asking me for her e-mail address. As I already said, Elena doesn't want me to share her e-mail address, so I'm sorry, I can't help you there. If I was allowed to publish it, I would give it out. I hope you understand.

29/03/2004 23:19 - Some one set up us the bomb! - Vincent van Scherpenseel - 2 comments
Allright, I've got another funny story to tell my grandchildren when I'm old: last saturday I went shopping in Haarlem to buy some gifts for my girlfriend Alexandra's birthday. When I returned to my bike (yes, in Holland everyone rides bicycles, no, not everyone wears wooden shoes, and no, not everyone lives in a mill, maybe 50% of us, but that's not everyone), I was surprised to find the street being closed by police forces. After walking around the block I was able to get about 20 meters near my bike, but not closer. When I asked why there were "Police - Don't cross" lines all around the city centre, I was told there was a bombthreat, at the place where I parked my bike, great. So, I decided to spend some time in the pub, waiting for the Bomb Squad to arrive.
After about an hour and a couple of beers I returned to the place where I parked my bike, and was surprised to find even more emergency teams. There were police-, fire- and hospitalmen everywhere, with a helicopter circelling above them. After watching the scene for a while, I was asked some questions like "What are you waiting for?", "For how long have you been waiting?", "What do you think of this situation?" by a TV reporter. I don't think anyone is really happy with a situation like this one, but hey, they've got a news broadcast to fill. So, after the short interview I was told by police that it would probably take two more hours, so I decided not to wait anymore and take the bus home and to pick up my bike in the evening when I would go out in Haarlem. I got home at around 17:00. Around 0:00 I was back in Haarlem to pick up my bike (which was, surprisingly, still there).
The next day I was on television, on the local TV channel called 'TV Noord-Holland' fo ...

24/03/2004 23:37 - Kid of Speed located! - Vincent van Scherpenseel - 8 comments
Great news: I think I've found Elena's (The Kid of Speed) contact information. I was checking out the old Angelfire website, and was surprised to not find the 'Under construction' message. Instead, it's been fully updated with new (good quality) pictures of her rides through Chernobyl. Not many people found out about the update yet, since I was visitor 87. Some of the pictures show a domain (www.kidofspeed.com), and by requesting the WHOIS information for this domain, I was able to retrieve her information. I just sent her an e-mail telling about my website and asking wether she would like to do some sort of an interview for my website. My idea is to let you (the visitors) ask questions for Elena, and then I'll select a few which I'll e-mail to her. I'll keep you updated on this. I just mirrored the new website (just to be sure), it's available here.

22/03/2004 12:49 - Traffic jams reported - Vincent van Scherpenseel - 0 comments
Whoa! What a week! My Chernobyl mirror was found so interesting by many Netizens that they decided to pass the URL around and so it ended up on IRC channels, big weblogs and E-zines! The outcome: thousands of visitors a day! I don't know the exact statistics yet, but it was an average of 2,000 unique visitors a day for about a week, with peaks of 2,500 unique visitors. It even got so bad that my /var partition got filled up with the log files of my Apache webserver! The amount of traffic is decreasing now, with an average of about 500 unique visitors a day. As soon as I get enough time I'm gonna cut & paste the logfiles together (I had to seperate them due to their hugeness) to calculate the totals (unique visitors, hits, data traffic, etc.). I want to thank everybody who linked to my mirror for his/her time to share these unbelievable pictures. The original website can be found here, but unfortunately it's still down.
